Chris's comments for
Legalize

(I do not advocate that anyone try marijuana if they have not already done so, and I strongly suggest that they stop using it if they have. It is my belief now, seven years after writing this song, that using marijuana may impede an individual's personal growth.)

Message of song:

There are many factors to consider in the legalization of marijuana. It seemed to me that the government and media were suppressing the truth, and that has always offended me.

How it was written:

At the time (1990), I felt very strongly that marijuana should be legalized for industrial, medical, and recreational use. In the lyrics, I quote the findings of a 1989 report by Francis Young, Chief Administrative Law Judge of the DEA, and a statement of C. Everett Koop, the Surgeon General of the United States. I also quote a 1916 Government report on the use of hemp to make paper. In other words, I quote top Government officials to refute the official policy!

Musical notes:

This is practically a folk song. It is in the key of C.
